Middle Ages

This is our entry-level course for ages 11 and up, which focuses on the literature from and about medieval Britain. Knights, dragons, wizards -- what more could a student want for a lively subject to study?

  • Reading texts from the Middle Ages are Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a selection of Canterbury Tales, Piers the Ploughman, and a selection of York Mystery Plays; the texts which are about the Middle Ages are Ivanhoe, Once and Future King (Book 1), and Idylls of the King.
  • Background texts are Marshall's English Literature for Boys and Girls, and Bulfinch's Age of Chivalry.
  • Add-On Composition extension focuses on skills for iGCSE English Language exams.
  • Add-On Reading extension is available for those students are especially able and requires a minimum of 4 students to make the book club viable. Texts are a variety of historical- or medieval-flavoured novels such as Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and The Hobbit.
Middle Ages Literature 2016-2017 is scheduled to meet on Mondays from 4-5 pm UK time (3:30 pm for add-on composition students). The first class will be 12th September, 2016.
