Brit Novels

Our Great British Novels course tackles almost 200 years of classic English novels to 1890, and is especially designed for Year 9 and up. Unlike the other two courses, poetry and drama are the focus of the add-on reading extension.

  • Reading texts are Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, Mansfield Park, Frankenstein, A Christmas Carol, selections of Romantic poetry, Wuthering Heights, Far from the Madding Crowd, and The Importance of Being Earnest.
  • Background texts are the final third of Marshall's English Literature for Boys and Girls, and James Sire's "How to Read Slowly".
  • Add-On Composition extension focuses on skills for iGCSE and A-level English literature.
  • Add-On Reading extension is available for those students are especially able and requires a minimum of 4 students to make the book club viable. Texts will focus on poetry and drama from the period, and will include three comedy of manners plays and five Romantic poets.
Great British Novels classes will meet on Mondays from 7-8 pm UK time (6:30 pm for add-on composition extension). The first class is scheduled to begin on 12th September, 2016.
